Artist’s Statement
I have a passion for the painting process which is a delicate balance of skill and intuition, a fluctuation of control and careful planning, letting go, allowing for surprises, then bringing it all back into focus. There are many layers in the painting activity, from the idea/germination stage, to developing the concept, the selection of color, medium, the “surface” reality, and last but not least, the inward journey, wrestling with the muse, seeking the unknown, and expressing emotions that are often without definition. Drawing upon a multitude of life experiences, I pour myself into my paintings, and regardless of the style, I feel that there are recognizable similarities in each one.
The florals and landscapes are a reflection of the beauty around us and an attempt to bring a little peace and harmony into a very unstable and disconcerting world. The abstracts are ventures into the unknown, finding beauty in the mystery and the undefined, in the shadow as well as the illumined object, all of which somehow seem to have a purpose and demand to be created. Many have been completed during the late night hours, losing complete track of time until I realize that the sky is getting that pre-dawn gray glow, the birds are waking up, and I have somehow crossed that line between yesterday and tomorrow without blinking, and brought my paintings with me.
